The Mission of the Program

The ability to find and use information to solve problems, make decisions and conduct research is an essential requirement for everyone who wishes to successfully cope with today's information-rich world. Developing competencies in locating, accessing, evaluating, and constructing meaning out of these sources is the essence of information literacy. These skills are so critical to higher education and to life beyond it that the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools has identified information literacy as one of the essential components of a college education.

Curriculum Integrated Instruction

The Greenley Library offers information literacy instruction tailored to specific courses. The classes are designed to help students distinguish among various sources, determine if a source is appropriate for a given assignment and design effective research strategies. By integrating instruction within a class, we can insure that students' immediate academic needs are met while also teaching them skills that are applicable across disciplines.

Instructors

Theresa Zahor, MA, MLIS. 
Theresa is the Head of Reference and Information Literacy at FSC. She received her Masters in Library & Information Science from C.W. Post at Long Island University, and a Masters in Educational Computing from Stony Brook University. Terry has taught library instruction courses across disciplines and in multiple formats and venues. She also teaches faculty how to incorporate IL assignments and new technologies into their curriculum.  Terry is the campus administrator for Turnitin (anti-plagiarism) and NoodleTools (citation tool).

April Lynne Earle, MA, MLS.
In addition to providing Information Literacy Instruction and Reference Service, April is the Cataloging Librarian in Technical Services. She received her MLS and MA in Public History from St. John’s University. April enjoys teaching library instruction classes across the disciplines but she especially loves helping researchers dig into our College Archives.

Megan Marchese, MLS
Megan is a Reference and Information Literacy Librarian. She provides Reference Service and teaches Information Literacy classes across all disciplines, and hopes to inspire students to become excellent researchers. Megan received her MLS from St. John’s University.

Fatoma Rad, MSLIS, MA in progress.
Fatoma is the Acquisitions librarian for FSC. In addition, she provides reference services to the Farmingdale community as well as teaches Information Literacy classes. Fatoma received her MSLIS from Pratt Institute and is currently pursuing a MA in Higher Education Administration at Stony Brook University. She hopes to provide students with the research tools and skills they need to feel empowered to do research on their own and be successful in their academic careers
