Food Pantry

A Green Apple with the words Food Pantry next to itRecognizing the challenges associated with food insecurity, Farmingdale State College proudly opens its Food Pantry doors during the Spring 2022 semester. The Food Pantry offers healthy food selections to all current members of the Farmingdale State College community experiencing hunger. The FSC Food Pantry is a judgment-free place for community members in need of assistance. The aid received from the Food Pantry is not a long-term fix, but a bi-weekly resource for those who are food insecure. If a member of the Farmingdale State College Community is in need of more long-term assistance, below is a list of local resources.

All personal information regarding the food recipients will be kept confidential.

What is Food Insecurity?

Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. It is important to note that though hunger and food insecurity are closely related, they are two distinct concepts. Hunger refers to a personal, physical sensation of discomfort, while food insecurity refers to a lack of available financial resources for food at the household level. - Feeding America

Why We Offer a Pantry

In 2021, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras announced that “The pangs of hunger should not cloud a student’s education” (SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras, 2021).  However, financial constraints are one of the top reasons students do not complete their college degree (U.S. News, 2019). Likewise, rates of food insecurity among college students ranged from 42% to 56% at two-year institutions and from 33% to 42% at four-year institutions (Goldrick-Rab, Baker-Smith, Coca, Looker & Williams, 2019).  This problem is also demonstrated across SUNY campuses. According to SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras, 40 percent of all SUNY students have experienced food insecurity and in 2019 alone, students have visited food pantries 320,000 times (SUNY Press Release, 2021).   In addition, a study by Wolfson et al. (2021) showed that students from food-insecure households were 43 percent less likely to graduate from college than their non-food insecure counterparts. This highlights that food insecurity is an issue that impacts retention and successful completion of degrees.

Farmingdale State College is, "Dedicated to student success".
